FAQ

Is SpeedRunners 2 beginner friendly?
Yes. The game includes a story campaign with tutorials, bot practice for offline play, and a casual online queue. You can learn the movement system entirely offline before racing real people — the official achievement list even separates Basic and Advanced tutorial tracks.
How many players can race at once in SpeedRunners 2?
Up to 8 players share one online or local race. Tournaments scale further — up to 64 entrants in a bracket — but each individual race stays at 8 runners.
Do I need to play the original SpeedRunners first?
No. SpeedRunners 2 is built to stand on its own. The official FAQ says the sequel preserves the original techniques, so anything you learned in SpeedRunners (2016) transfers — but nothing requires it.
What is the best first mode for a new player?
Play the story campaign tutorials first, then practice against bots, then join casual online races. Save ranked play for later — the [game modes guide](/guides/game-modes/) tracks its current status.

SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed is a side-scrolling racing platformer where you don’t win by crossing a finish line — you win by surviving. Up to eight superheroes sprint through gadget-filled tracks, and trailing runners get consumed, one by one, by an ever-shrinking ring of fire — the official description’s own words — and one official achievement is about escaping that fire at the last second. Last runners standing take the race.

This beginner guide covers the three things every new player needs on day one: how elimination actually works, what each mode is for, and a first-session routine that takes you from installation to your first online win.

How Do You Win a Race in SpeedRunners 2?

You knock everyone else off the screen. The camera tracks the race leaders; if you fall behind the pack far enough that you slide off the screen edge, you are eliminated. Races keep going until only a few runners remain — so staying with the pack matters more than leading every single second.

That single rule shapes everything:

  • Speed is survival. Booster pads, momentum and clean movement keep you on screen.
  • Pick-ups are weapons. Missiles, traps and freezing rays exist to slow the runners ahead of you — see our full pick-ups guide.
  • The grapple is king. Your grappling hook swings you through the map’s blue ceiling sections; learning to keep speed through a swing is the core skill — our movement guide breaks it down.

Which Mode Should You Start With?

SpeedRunners 2 ships with several ways to play, and they serve different purposes:

Mode What it is Who it’s for
Story campaign Tutorial-driven single-player campaign added during Early Access Brand-new players — learn movement without queue pressure
Bot practice Offline races against AI Testing movement and pick-ups safely
Casual online Up to 8 players per race Your first real races
Tournaments Bracket events with up to 64 entrants Groups and communities
Local & split-screen Couch multiplayer, plus LAN and Steam Remote Play Together Same-room groups — see playing with friends
Ranked Appears in the official achievements (“Play a Ranked match for the first time”); a 1v1 Ranked update has been previewed Competitive players — see the game modes guide

Your First Session, Step by Step

Thirty to sixty minutes is enough to go from install to competitive online races.

  1. Play the tutorial campaign stages. They teach running, jumping, sliding and the grappling hook in order. Don’t rush — the hook is the skill the whole game hangs on.
  2. Race the bots. Run a handful of offline races to warm up your movement. Practice keeping momentum through grapple swings instead of stopping to line up “perfect” jumps.
  3. Learn two or three maps. Every map is built from the same mechanic vocabulary — booster pads, blue grapple ceilings, wall-jump sections, levers that reroute the course. Our maps overview explains the system.
  4. Join casual online races. Expect to lose your first several races while you learn what pick-ups do when they’re thrown at you. That’s normal — the pick-up learning curve is the real difficulty spike.
  5. Watch the better runners. When you’re eliminated, the race keeps going and you can see how the survivors move. Steal their routes.

The Three Mistakes New Runners Make

  • Stopping to aim. Speed is life. Experienced runners throw pick-ups mid-swing rather than slowing down for a clean shot.
  • Ignoring the golden hook. The golden grappling hook is a pick-up that drags runners in front of you toward you — it is not the same action as your free movement grapple. New players routinely confuse the two; the pick-ups guide has the full breakdown.
  • Playing only one map. Online rotation will take you everywhere. Time spent on two maps is time wasted when the rotation moves on.
