The Crate in SpeedRunners 2: How Blocking Items Works
The Crate is SpeedRunners 2’s shield pick-up — hold it to block incoming items. Two official achievements confirm it, and 30% of Steam players have already used it.

How common is blocking in SpeedRunners 2?
Every offense in SpeedRunners 2 has a counter, and the Crate is the counter you hold: the shield of the pick-up pool. It is also one of the best-evidenced mechanics in the game — the official achievement list does not just name it, it grades it.
The Official Record
- Two achievements confirm the mechanic. From the official list: “Not This Time — Block an item with a Crate” and “Predictable — Block an item with a Crate 5 times.” A single-use achievement and a repetition achievement — that is a core mechanic, not a footnote.
- The player base uses it. Steam’s global achievement stats (September 18, 2026): 30.2% of players have blocked with a Crate; 4.4% have done it five times. For context, that first number sits between “win a match online” (51.7%) and “play a Quickplay match” (26.3%) — blocking is mainstream behavior, not a hidden tech.
- A different thing from map crates. The official Lightning Watch reveal describes going “through physical objects like crates” — crates as level geometry. The pick-up Crate is the item-slot shield. Same word, two objects; do not let a guide blur them.
How the Shield Slot Actually Plays
Blocking is a timing and state skill, closer to a fighting-game block than an item throw:
- Hold while leading. The moment you are in front, you are everyone’s target — the Rocket exists to slow whoever leads. A crate in hand converts their item slot into a wasted slot.
- Read the arm, not the throw. Items travel the racing line. If the runner behind you takes a straight aimed at your back, that is the tell — hold through it.
- Respect the dodge achievements. The Golden Hook has a counter-achievement for dodging it five times — meaning the design treats dodging and blocking as both valid defenses. Against hooks, movement may beat the crate; against the confirmed thrown items like the Rocket, the crate is the answer.
- After the block, answer. A blocked item is tempo: they spent a slot, you kept yours. The natural follow-up is the Trap placed on your line, or your own thrown item the moment their defense is down.
The Defense Triangle
| Incoming | Your hold | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rocket / thrown items | Crate | Breaks the hit — the confirmed use |
| Golden Hook | Movement (dodge) | The dodge achievements imply readability; blocking a hook is unverified |
| Freeze Ray | Unverified | The ray is a thrown pick-up, but whether a held Crate blocks it is not documented — we do not claim it |
That middle row is the honest boundary of current knowledge: what the Crate does against the Golden Hook specifically is not documented, so we do not claim it.
