Ranked in SpeedRunners 2: The 1v1 Ladder Explained
SpeedRunners 2 Ranked is one-on-one and officially added by the September 18 patch (Patch 1.4). The ladder, the queue, and where eight-player races live.

Ranked is where SpeedRunners 2 stops being a party and starts being a duel. This page tracks what is actually verified about the competitive queue — and it starts by correcting an assumption many guides still carry: Ranked is live, and it plays one-on-one.
What Is Verified, in Order of Certainty
- Ranked is a shipped feature. The official store page has listed “Competitive Ranked play” in its feature bullets since launch day, and the About copy tells you to “get sweaty in Ranked.” This is not a roadmap promise — it is on the box.
- Real players are earning it. The official achievement “All the Way to the Top — Play a Ranked match for the first time” had been earned by 12.4% of Steam players as of September 18, 2026 (Steam’s own global achievement stats) — early unlocks that were themselves evidence the queue had quietly gone live before the patch formalized it.
- The format is 1v1. Players in ranked matchmaking are consistently reporting one-opponent races — including new players asking why they cannot find the eight-runner mode there — and community ladder videos show solo placements (a top-50 climb was posted in mid-September).
- A real ladder exists. Placements and ranks are in the game; community videos show players holding top-50 positions.
Matchmaking Is 1v1 — and That Is Not a Bug
The single most common ranked question right now: “I queue up and get one opponent — where is everyone?”
That is the format. Ranked in SpeedRunners 2 is a duel queue: one runner, one opponent, the fire closing in on both of you. If you want the eight-runner pile-ups the game is famous for:
| You want | Queue |
|---|---|
| Fast full lobbies, up to 8 runners | Quickplay |
| Custom races with friends | Casual online + private lobbies |
| Bracket competition, up to 64 entrants | Tournaments |
| One clean opponent and a ladder | Ranked — you are in the right place |
Why 1v1 Suits This Game
SpeedRunners elimination is about the camera and the pack: fall behind the leaders and the screen edge eats you. Strip the field down to two and the same rules become a different sport:
- No pack to hide in. In an eight-runner race you can ride mid-field and let others fight. In 1v1, every mistake is yours alone — the movement techniques that win casual races decide every single point here.
- Pick-ups become duels. One opponent means every Rocket is aimed at you, every Golden Hook is hunting you, and holding a Crate to block is suddenly half the game. Read the full pick-ups guide — item play is a bigger share of 1v1 than of any other mode.
- The fire is the referee. With two runners, the ever-shrinking ring of fire turns each race into a tempo contest: force one bad grapple, one hesitation at a wall-jump section, and the screen does the rest.
How Matches Run, Technically
One official fact worth knowing before you blame your router: SpeedRunners 2 uses peer-to-peer (P2P) connections — one player hosts the session (official FAQ). That is true in Ranked too, so occasionally a “laggy match” is a far-away host, not your network. Our lag and connection troubleshooting page covers what actually helps.
The Honest Timeline
A September 5 developer preview named a 1v1 Ranked update, runner outline customization, and pick-up balance work. The ranked queue was verifiably live by September 15 (achievement unlocks at scale, player reports, ladder videos) — though whether it ran from launch day or was switched on earlier in the week was never separately announced, and we say so instead of inventing a date. The September 18 patch notes then pinned it officially: “Added a 1v1 Ranked Mode.” The same patch shipped outline customization and the pick-up balance pass, closing out the whole preview list — the patch notes page has the row.
